Katelyn G. 2022 on Upslash

Hello dear readers! Fall is my favorite season. Petrichor filling the air, eating roasted chestnuts, drinking earl gray tea, the fog setting in and competing with my friends about which one of us can step on the crunchiest leaves is just my favorite thing! In here, I’ve compiled a list of things I’d like to do this fall, maybe this can give you ideas on what to do with your friends too!!

Honestly, I don’t know how I’ll manage to do all of these things because uni is rough y’all. Don’t even think to ask me my plans for november because I’ve got none.

To watch:

When I hear fall, the first thing that comes to my head is the amount of cozy shows with creepy undertones that I love watching. Here is a list of some of my favorites.

  1. Over the Garden Wall: A fall classic, this cartoon is one of my favorite things to watch whenever I want to watch something that I can analyze to my heart’s content and draw fanart of. I think I’ve watched it every year since I discovered it.
  2. The Addams Family franchise: not including this would be a crime. With Wednesday’s popularity rising, you might want to check out the original movies if you want a creepy yet funny movie to watch.
  3. First Kill: one of my favorite trashy queer romcoms, I cannot get enough of this and I’m so sad it got cancelled.
  4. I Am Not Ok With This: pure perfection, once again I’m so upset that it got cancelled.
  5. Little Women: the coziest movie ever, I rewatch it almost every year
  6. Anne with an E: while some of the things Anne does give me an unspeakable amount of second-hand embarrassment, I love her so much it’s crazy. I see so much of myself in her and I think a lot of the people around me would agree.
  7. Interview with the Vampire: the movies and the series are just so good, I feel like they’re the perfect things to watch for fall.
  8. The Craft: It’s so amazing, I had a halloween movie marathon with my friends a few years ago and this was our favorite out of every movie that we watched.
  9. Gravity falls: I just love this cartoon so much
  10. Owl house: Need I say more?
  11. Coraline: Once again, need I say more?
  12. The Truman Show: I know this is a classic but I’ve never had the time to watch it, the premise of it seems quite horrifying to be honest so I think this deserves its spot here, I think it’s going to be one of the first things I watch when I have the time.
  13. Wendel & Wild: I remember this was so popular when it came out, I’m so excited to watch it!
  14. Girl From Nowhere: I watched this when it first came out, it was so amazing!! I never got around to watching the second season but I honestly can’t wait.
  15. Sinners: I loved this movie so much when I first watched it! Honestly have been looking for an opportunity to rewatch and I recommend it to you 1000%!

To read:

Fall means I can grab a blanket, brew some tea and read while listening to the rain pitter-patter against my window. Here is a list of books that I have loved and books that I haven’t read yet that I would love to get to this fall.

  1. Carmilla— Sheridan Le Fanu: I reread this every year. I love this book so much I might get a tattoo dedicated to it. I will warn you though, I would definitely not describe it as an ahead-of-its-time lesbian romance. The lesbian aspects of this book were written to “scare” the reader and show how “predatory” towards young, innocent women such as Laura lesbianism is, much like other vampire works during this time. (Carmilla essay incoming?)
  2. The Castle of Otranto— Horace Walpole: I absolutely love gothic literature and heard that this was basically the blueprint. I would love to devour this book.
  3. The White Guy Dies First— Terry J. Benton-Walker (Editor), Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, Kalynn Bayron, Kendare Blake, H.E. Edgmon, Lamar Giles, Chloe Gong, Alexis Henderson, Tiffany D. Jackson, Adiba Jaigirdar, Naseem Jamnia, Karen Strong, Mark Oshiro: given the icons that took part in writing this compilation of short stories, I already KNOW it’s gonna slap.
  4. Dracula— Bram Stoker: Once I am done with my Carmilla reread, TRUST I will be reading this.
  5. Kürk Mantolu Madonna (Madonna in the Fur Coat)— Sabahattin Ali: I’ve been wanting to read this book for the longest time, I’ve just never gotten around to it, much to the disappointment of my mother who loves this book.
  6. Love and Other Wicked Things — Philline Harms, Dominique Riley, Thabfu: I started reading this webtoon this summer but got caught up in other things so I never finished it.
  7. Wuthering Heights— Emily Brontë: I’m just going to pretend like the movie doesn’t exist ok?
  8. The Picture of Dorian Grey— Oscar Wilde: Movie? What movie? I’ve never heard of it.
  9. The Vegetarian— Han Kang: the second I find a copy of this book I’m buying it, I’ve been wanting to read it for so long!
  10. Le Horla (The Horla)— Guy de Maupassant: I read this book once for a school assignment and really liked it, I haven’t re-read it since, all I remember was the feeling of reading it. I hope it’s as good as I remember!
  11. Yellowface— R. F. Kuang: I read Babel and simply fell in love with it, I heard Yellowface tackles similar themes, I’d love to read it.
  12. The Yellow Wallpaper— Charlotte Perkins Gilman: I heard this was such an unsettling book, I honestly can’t wait!
  13. Frankenstein— Mary Shelley: Can’t make this list without including this masterpiece.
  14. This is How You Lose the Time War— Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone: I love this book so much, it’s on the cozier side of things when it comes to this list and it destroyed me.
  15. White is for Witching— Helen Oyeyemi: I’ve heard so many good things about this book I’m waiting for it to come to my local library/book store so I can get my hands on it.

To do:

  1. A horror-themed escape game: this has been my dream for the longest time. I’d ideally do this on halloween but I’d need a huge group of friends and I feel like most of my friends wouldn’t be into this.
  2. Going to a a Jazz bar: this isn’t specifically goal for this fall, I just love jazz so much and would love to go to a jazz bar.
  3. Going to La Maison des Sorcières: it’s a history museum in Bergheim, I’m thinking of travelling around France during my break and going near the Gévaudan region. I love the Occult and I’ve been obsessed with vampires, werewolves and the like so it would be so fun.
  4. Going to a renaissance fair: need I say more?
  5. Museum visits: literally just going to every single museum that I can in my city while it’s free. I’ve been doing this throughout the year already but I feel like the beginning of the school year, before things get serious, is the best time to do this so I can enjoy my museum visits guilt-free.
  6. Going to Le Jardin de Mademoiselle tea house: I love a good themed café, I tried to go last year with one of my friends but they were completely booked. This year, I will be making a reservation weeks in advance so my place spot is guaranteed.
  7. Study dates with my friends: as much as I love talking shit about my university (my dear friends, I’m so sorry you have to hear me complain all the time), I love my major so much, the question is whether that love is reciprocated at all (it isn’t). Anyways, my point is, I love my major, I love my friends, the best way to bring them together is to have a study date in the library where we sit down, study for 15 minutes and then talk for the rest of our time in the study room.
  8. Going to Papoterie: either alone or with a friend, I would love to go to this cute little workshop where you decorate your own ceramic plates, cups and so much more! I feel like this is such a fun activity.
  9. Bake a pie: I finally have an air fryer hihi the possibilities are endless!
  10. Go on a hike: I would love to do this with my friends, we could follow an easy trail and then have a little picnic while watching the scenery!
  11. Pass my midterms: with good grades this time (pray for me pls)

I hope you enjoyed this little list of things I want to do this fall, I had a lot of fun coming up with it! I love this time of year, I’m just so excited for everything lately I don’t really know how to explain it. I feel like the sun is finally rising after a long time of being lost in the dark.

I hope to see you in my next post, I’m trying to establish a schedule that’ll work for me given that my schedule is very busy right know. I’m thinking posting once a week could be a good start and depending on how things go, I’ll try to post more.

See you soon!
